Local Delegations work together on debate practices, service-learning projects, fundraising efforts and State Assembly preparation prior to the State Conference.<\/p>\n
The purpose of this three-day learning opportunity is to bring the workings of the Ohio state government alive to students in grades 6-12.\u00a0 Students are given an opportunity to discuss current state issues with state administrators, elected officials, and students from other schools throughout the state.<\/p>\n
Each conference is led by teens elected to office by their fellow representatives.\u00a0 Held annually at the Statehouse in Columbus.\u00a0 Volunteers and the YMCA Staff, help guide the students through mock committee meetings and procedures.\u00a0 Students debate and vote on the bills that their fellow peers have written and presented.\u00a0 Bills that pass in committee are then taken to the floor of the House or Senate for full debate and vote.<\/p>\n
Youth hold offices of Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House and President of the Senate.\u00a0 Participants also engage in campaigns and elections for officers who will serve during the following year.<\/p>\n
Sample Youth and\u00a0Government Schedule<\/a><\/p>\n The Executive Branch Program allows students the opportunity to experience the executive branch of state government in Ohio.<\/p>\n During the Youth Assembly, opportunities for students to participate include Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House and many more.\u00a0 Elections take place during the Youth Assembly to elect the executive officers, who then serve for next year.<\/p>\n Students can also apply to be a part of the Governor’s Cabinet. The Governor’s Cabinet assists the Governor in promoting their agenda and legislation that they want to see passed. They will help the governor interview authors of bills that have passed both senate and house to make a decision to pass or veto the bills. If students are interested, they should select “Governor’s Cabinet” as their first choice on their conference application and also fill out this separate application form<\/a> by January 31st, 2023.<\/p>\n The goal of the Judicial Program is to expose high school students to the formal judicial process.\u00a0 The program promotes leadership through a Chief Justice and the use of practicing attorneys who not only judge the students, but also serve as mentors.\u00a0 The Judicial Program also promotes collaboration and compromise through the use of teams of attorneys and teams of judges working together to accomplish their goals.<\/p>\n The Legislative Program is based as closing as possible to the Ohio General Assembly.\u00a0 The program strives to turn the ideas of Ohio youth into formal laws by writing, debating, and voting on legislation according to the specific rules and procedures.<\/p>\n The goal of the Lobbyist Program is to promote the ideas of the civic involvement and leadership.\u00a0 Students engage in research, preparation of issue position papers, legislative proposal packets and persuasive speaking to advocate their issues before committee meetings, and one-on-one interaction with members of the Youth General Assembly.\u00a0 Further, the Lobbyist Program encourages collaboration and compromise as lobbyist work with other participants in Youth Assembly, as well as each other, to achieve their goals.<\/p>\n Participants engage in actual writing, interviewing, commentary, editing, photography, graphics, production of a website and video news report. Students should select “Media” as their first choice when they register for conference.
